The Top 12 Long-Blooming Perennials

March 25, 2019 – Gardener’s Journal – Long blooming perennials are the backbone to creating a garden of continuous bloom. The average perennial flower will bloom from two to three weeks, so choosing perennials that bloom for many months is an added bonus.

It’s very difficult to whittle down a list of the top 12 long blooming perennials. The plant choices are many and there will always be a new plant or hybrid. The hardy, outstanding, long blooming perennials chosen below have been grown and trialed in our Caledon, Ontario Zone 5 botanical gardens at Plant Paradise Country Gardens.

Agastache Blue Fortune Hyssop

1. All Agastache (anise hyssop) are long-bloomers. Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ has 7 inch lavender blue flower spikes that are a magnet for pollinators, butterflies and bees. Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ is a drought tolerant, deer resistant, long-blooming perennial that is easy to grow and usually does not require staking.

  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: All types of well drained soil
  • Moisture: Average – Tolerates dry
  • Benefits: Pollinators, Butterflies, Cut-flower, Long-blooming
  • Height: 3 feet
  • Blooms: July to October
  • Foliage: Healthy, aromatic, licorice scented green foliage.
  • Spacing: 24 inches
  • Growth Habit: Clumping
  • Zones: 4-9

Heliopsis helianthoides 'Sunstruck' (false sunflower)

2. All Heliopsis helianthoides (false sunglower) are long-blooming perennials, but Heliopsis h. ‘Sunstuck’ has added bonus of spectacular foliage. Heliopsis helianthoides ‘Sunstruck’ (false sunflower) has a compact habit, more ray florets and a deeper golden yellow flower colour than Heliopsis ‘Loraine Sunshine. The large 2 inch flowers appear earlier than other Heliopsis selections. Heliopsis helianthoides ‘Sunstruck’ is an easy to grow, long-blooming, tall hardy perennial that attracts a multitude of pollinators.

  • Height: 16 inches
  • Blooms: June to September

Persicaria polymorpha (giant fleeceflower)

3. All Persicaria are long-bloomers. Persicaria polymorpha (giant fleeceflower) is a long-blooming easy to grow perennial with giant, white frothy plumes. Once established it is drought tolerant and will bloom in full sun or full shade. It makes a great architectural backdrop and feature in the perennial border.

  • Light: Full Sun or Full Shade
  • Soil: Any type – the better the soil the better the plant grows
  • Moisture: Average – Moist – Dry
  • Benefits: Deer Resistant, Long-Blooming, Easy
  • Height: 5-6 feet in shade or 7-8 feet in sun
  • Blooms: June-October
  • Foliage: Green
  • Spacing: 4-6 feet
  • Growth Habit: Clump, Shrub-like
  • Zones: 3-9

Geranium 'Rozanne' cranesbill geranium

4. Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is one of the longest flowering Geraniums. The violet-blue flowers with a white eye appear in masses above the rounded mounding foliage. Geranium ‘Rozanne’ will grow 2 to 3 feet in one season and performs extremely well in part shade. Trim the blooms when the flowering starts to lag and it will be rejuvenated and continue flowering until frost.

  • Height: 20 inches

Heuchera 'Paris' (coral bells)

5. Heuchera ‘Paris’ (Coral Bells) has deep rose-pink flowers from June to frost in sun or shade. Outstanding!! This is a fast growing, hardy perennial that comes back year after year. Heuchera ‘Paris’ is one of the best Coral Bells we have ever grown. It makes a great addition to the shade garden.

  • Light: Part Shade – Full Shade – Full Sun
  • Soil: All types except sandy
  • Moisture: Average
  • Benefits: Pollinators, Cut-flower, Butterflies, Continuous Blooming
  • Height: 6 inches (14 inches with flowers)
  • Blooms: June until frost
  • Foliage: White Veiled Green, Serrated
  • Spacing: 12 inches
  • Growth Habit: Mounding
  • Zones: 4-9

Coreopsis verticillata

6. Coreopsis verticillata is taller and more vigorous than Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’ or ‘Zagreb’. It has bright yellow flowers for 8 weeks or more, from June to September (or later). Drought tolerant and easy to grow in a garden or along the roadside. Low maintenance. This Coreopsis variety is native to North America. Winter snow coverage helps extend the hardiness Zone in colder climates.

Nepeta faassenii 'Purrsian Blue' (catmint)

7. All Nepeta (catmint) are long-bloomers. Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’ is a fast grower that forms a compact, tight round mound of aromatic foliage. Dark purple calyxes that hold periwinkle blue flowers.

Anemone hupehensis japonica ‘Pamina’

8. Anemone hupehensis japonica ‘Pamina’ has double, rich pink flowers that bloom in late summer for many months. The flowers rise above the mounding green foliage. Anemone hupehensis japonica ‘Pamina’ is a strong, hardy grower that can spread to a sizable clump. Best planted in the middle of the border for late season interest until a hard frost.

9. Leucanthemum superbum Amazing Daisies ‘Daisy May’ (shasta daisy) has been one of the longest blooming shasta daisies we have ever grown. The 3 inch single pure white flower petals form a solid dome of blooms from early summer into very late summer. This a long-blooming, vigorous grower has excellent disease resistance. Leucanthemum superbum Amazing Daisies ‘Daisy May’ has been reliably hardy in soil that has good drainage. A++

10. All Astrantia (masterwort) are long-bloomers. Astrantia ‘Abbey Road’ has masses of deep reddish-purple, button shaped flowers on black stems. The exquisite mounding, lobed foliage looks great all season and the sturdy bloom stems rise above the foliage. Flowers early until frost with deadheading of the finished flowers. Astrantia are a magnet for pollinators, butterflies and bees. Astrantia are outstanding perennials that are not often seen.

Kalimeris incisa ‘Blue Star’ (Japanese aster)

11. Kalimeris incisa ‘Blue Star’ is a long-blooming perennial with masses of 1. 5 inch lavender blue daisy shaped flowers. It is outstanding and deadheading is not required for continuous bloom. Once established Kalimeris incisa ‘Blue Star’ is very drought tolerant, low maintenance perennial.

Echinacea Glowing Dream coneflower

12. All Echinacea (coneflowers) are long-bloomers. Echinacea ‘Glowing Dream’ (coneflower) has intense, glowing, watermelon pink, daisy shaped flowers. Echinacea ‘Glowing Dream’ makes a great plant combination with Monarda or Phlox. The daisy shaped Echinaceas are a magnet for butterflies and pollinators.
