Stylophorum diphyllum (wood poppy) has very bright, 4 petaled yellow flowers that light up the shade garden in early spring. It is native to North America and grows in partly shaded woodland forests. It does self-seed readily, but is easily removed. It can form a dense ground-cover. The seed pods are very ornamental.
