Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ (Japanese combed grass) has green and yellow variegated foliage that slowly forms a cascading, waterfall-like clump. With cooler weather the foliage turns shade of reddish-pink in the fall. If planted in full shade the foliage will not be as bright a yellow. If planted in full sun, constant moisture is required. It spreads very slowly by shallow rhizomes. Grow it for the foliage, not the flowers. Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ provides great contrasting leaf colour to other perennials. We like to match it with different Heuchera leaf colours. Heuchera Northern Exposure Red or Heuchera ‘Paris’ work well when planted next to Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’. We sell large rooted divisions.
