Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ (Betony) was the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2019 and for many good reasons. Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ is in the same family as ‘Lamb’s Ear’ but has a totally different growth habit, foliage and does not have any invasive properties. Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ is a clump forming perennial that is low maintenance, drought tolerant, disease and pest resistant.
The bloom stems rise above the mounding foliage in summer with showy, densely packed, button shaped, rose-purple flowers. It is a magnet for bees and butterflies. Deadheading of the finished flowers encourages re-bloom. The mounded foliage looks great even after flowering.
We have grown Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ for many years at Plant Paradise Country Gardens and it combines beautifully with any daisy shaped flower like Leucanthemum or Echinacea.
